What Is Live Car Data?

Live car data is information reported by your vehicle's computers while the engine is actually operating. With an OBD-II adapter and compatible software, you can watch values such as engine RPM, coolant temperature, throttle position, engine load, fuel trims and charging voltage change as you drive.

A traditional diagnostic trouble code can tell you that the vehicle's computer detected a problem. OBD-II live data can tell you what the vehicle is actually doing.

The important difference: a trouble code is an event or warning. Live car data is a continuously changing picture of vehicle operation.

Where Does Live Car Data Come From?

Cars and light trucks sold in the United States since the mid-1990s generally provide an OBD-II diagnostic connector. The vehicle's computers make many operating values available through this connection.

A Bluetooth OBD-II adapter can read supported information from the vehicle and send it to a phone. Software can then display the readings, record them, or analyze how they change over time.

What Can You See in OBD-II Live Data?

Exactly which values are available depends on the vehicle, but commonly available OBD-II data includes:

Vehicle Speed Lets other readings be compared with what the vehicle was doing at that moment.
Voltage Useful information about battery and charging-system behavior.

Why Look at Live Data While Driving?

A single reading only describes one instant. Many vehicle problems are intermittent or appear only under particular conditions.

An engine may behave normally at idle but differently during acceleration. A charging system may look fine immediately after starting but change after the vehicle has been running. Fuel trims can behave differently at idle, cruising speed and under load.

That is why recording OBD-II live data over an entire drive can be particularly useful. It allows readings to be compared with one another and with the conditions under which they occurred.

A Drive Tells a Story

Consider a vehicle starting with a cold engine.

At first, coolant temperature should be close to ambient temperature. After the engine starts, RPM may initially be elevated. Charging voltage should reflect alternator operation. As the vehicle is driven, coolant temperature rises, engine load changes, throttle position moves and the fuel-management system responds.

Many OBD-II applications are excellent at displaying gauges and live readings on a phone. But once the drive is over, the information that appeared on the screen can be more valuable if it has been preserved.

A recorded driving session can be reviewed later, compared with another drive, downloaded for independent examination, or analyzed as a complete set of related measurements.
